Exploring the jungle, climbing Maya temples, and swimming through river caves requires the right gear setup. Clothing that works well on a Caribbean beach will quickly become uncomfortable in the humid rainforest of Cayo.
Below is our definitive packing checklist based on 15+ years of guiding travelers through ATM Cave, Cave Tubing, and ancient ruins from San Ignacio.
The Master Adventure Packing Checklist
1. Footwear & Socks (Crucial for Caves)
- Closed-toe water shoes or keens with sturdy rubber grips
- Trail runners with drainage (great for ATM cave hike & swim)
- 2 pair of thick athletic socks — MANDATORY inside ATM Cathedral room to protect Maya pottery
- Flip-flops or sandals (for after the tour only)
2. Adventure Clothing (Quick-Dry Only)
- Lightweight, synthetic moisture-wicking shirts (avoid heavy cotton)
- Quick-dry shorts or athletic leggings for hiking & swimming
- Lightweight long-sleeve rashguard (protects from sun & cold cave water)
- Change of dry clothes left in private tour vehicle
3. Hydration & Dry Bags
- 10L to 20L waterproof dry bag for dry clothes & snacks
- Refillable stainless steel or insulated water bottle (1.5L+)
- Compact quick-dry microfiber travel towel
4. Sun & Bug Protection
- Eco-friendly reef-safe sunscreen (must apply BEFORE entering nature reserves)
- Deet-free insect repellent or Picaridin spray for jungle trails
- Wide-brim hat or baseball cap for ruin tours (Xunantunich / Caracol)
- Polarized sunglasses with strap
Camera & Phone Ban at ATM Cave

Why are socks mandatory inside ATM Cave?+
To protect ancient Maya artifacts and calcified floor formations in the dry Cathedral room, visitors must remove their shoes and walk in socks only. Going barefoot transfers oils that damage the cave ecosystem. Be sure to bring thick, clean athletic socks!
Are water shoes or sneakers better for cave tubing and ATM?+
Sturdy water shoes with thick rubber soles (like Keen, Chaco with toe guard, or Astral) or old trail running shoes are best. Water socks with thin neoprene soles are NOT recommended because you will be walking over sharp river rocks and jungle roots.
Do I need to bring my own cave helmet or headlamp?+
